400 Celebs Sign Open Letter Backing Jimmy Kimmel, Including Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Aniston

Hollywood — Over 400 celebrities have signed an open letter organized by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in support of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, following his indefinite suspension by ABC.

The suspension came after Kimmel’s monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in which he made contentious remarks about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The comments drew criticism, not only from conservative groups, but also from FCC Chair Brendan Carr, who warned of regulatory consequences if ABC did not respond.

What the Open Letter Says

  • The letter condemns what signatories call government pressure on private companies to punish speech, seeing Kimmel’s suspension as a violation of free speech.

  • It describes the move as a “dark moment for freedom of speech in our nation,” arguing that when media figures are silenced for expressing opinions, it endangers everyone’s rights.

  • The signatories emphasize that regardless of political affiliation, “our voices should never be silenced by those in power — because if it happens to one of us, it happens to all of us.”

Some Notable Signatories

Among those who signed:

  • Tom Hanks

  • Meryl Streep

  • Jennifer Aniston

  • Others include Ben Affleck, Selena Gomez, Pedro Pascal, Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jamie Lee Curtis, Natalie Portman, Jackson Bateman, Kerry Washington, Mark Ruffalo and many more.

Reactions & Implications

  • Many in the entertainment industry see this as a precedent-setting moment, with concerns that political pressure is increasingly being used to influence what media outlets can or cannot air.

  • The incident has sparked debates around free speech, corporate responsibility, and regulatory overreach.

  • In response to backlash, Disney (which owns ABC) later announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would return to broadcast, stating that “days of thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel preceded the decision.
