Jim Caviezel Steps Away from Playing Jesus in Mel Gibson’s Upcoming ‘Resurrection of the Christ’

Jim Caviezel Steps Away from Playing Jesus in Mel Gibson’s Upcoming ‘Resurrection of the Christ’

After nearly two decades since “The Passion of the Christ,” Gibson’s long-awaited sequel is moving forward without its original star.

Los Angeles,
Actor Jim Caviezel, best known for his unforgettable portrayal of Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s 2004 epic The Passion of the Christ, will not reprise his role in the filmmaker’s upcoming sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ, according to new industry reports.

Sources close to the production say the decision came down to a combination of creative direction, scheduling conflicts, and the evolving visual scope of the film. The sequel, which Gibson has been developing for several years, is expected to explore the period between Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection — a concept the director has described as “mystical and deeply spiritual.”

“This project is expanding in ways that make it unlike anything Mel Gibson has done before,” said a production insider. “It’s an ambitious vision that required a new creative approach.”

Caviezel had previously confirmed his involvement in early interviews, calling Gibson’s script “one of the most powerful stories ever written.” However, with new production plans and a delayed shooting schedule, the role is now being recast as the project prepares to enter pre-production in early 2026.

Industry speculation suggests the film may employ new visual techniques — including advanced CGI and de-aging effects — to portray the biblical events in a fresh and cinematic way.

“Replacing Caviezel is no small decision,” said film critic Lauren Fields. “His performance in the original film became iconic, but this sequel aims to take the narrative into new territory.”

The Resurrection of the Christ will be directed by Mel Gibson and co-written by Randall Wallace, the duo behind Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ. While an official release date has not been confirmed, reports indicate that Gibson hopes for a 2027 theatrical premiere.
